Great Ideas In Any Medium
Of all the Cannes Lion categories, for me the Cyber Lions are the most fascinating, not only because of any vested interests but also because it is the youngest, most slippery category and an absolute definition is elusive. For over a decade “digital” has struggled with being taken seriously, to find a relevant position in the “marketing mix”. Long regarded as the slightly peculiar, buck-toothed cousin of TV, film, radio and print, it has often been seen as something of an after-thought, the toddler playing in the sandpit while the sneering big boys are off pulling girls and drinking beer. And yet those within digital circles have long murmured that very soon it would be they who were ruled the roost.
A couple of years ago I read an attack-dog blog post declaring “traditional” agencies dinosaurs; bloated behemoths, lumbering blindly toward a new cyber dawn, too big and cumbersome to adapt to the nuances and diverse shades of the burgeoning digital era. The future was in the hands of those enlightened upstarts who laughed at antiquated linear, one-way communication models, who understood connectivity and “multiple information-exchange pathways” and who used phrases like…“multiple information-exchange pathways”....
